Black (Plate 2 – TG) Superb - sound and clean, four margin copy - used on cover the third day of issue, unusually cancelled contrary to regulations by two strikes of a Red Maltese Cross (Scarce thus), mailed from Chester to Preston, with a clear Chester May 8, 1840 backstamp.  The cover contains the original letter – a bill for £150 dated 8 May 1840, and a filing note on receipt dated 9 May 1840.  A little oxidation to the red ink (making it appear maroon), otherwise a superb and scarce third day of issue use of a Plate 2 Penny Black on a May 8, 1840 cover, with a scarce double strike of the Maltese Cross.  Note: Only Plate 1a and Plate 2 Penny Blacks were available for use during the first week of issue.
